Sunscreen: The single most important thing you could ever need for the summer. A personal cautionary horror story (that's a bit funny.)

With the rising temperatures and spring quickly blurring into summer, it’s safe to assume no ones staying home all day avoiding the sun. Instead, you’re making plans with friends, going to the beach, and making up for the horrid winter. However, though the sun and warmth is a nice change, it’s also important to change around some of your skincare routine for your face and body. Different cleansers, lighter moisturizers, lighter body lotions and more importantly incorporating sunscreen.

I was never that great about using sunscreen when I was younger, this was very foolish and obviously led to a vast amount of very unfortunate situations. One in particular, which I will be sharing as a horror story and an explanation on how I quickly became the biggest advocate for sunscreen.

Last summer a friend and I planned out a great fun day at the beach, naturally. (I should also note that I am very fair skinned and have a tendency to burn.) I brought my face sunscreen and borrowed my friends body sunscreen, reapplying numerous times through out the day. So much so that I was so sure that this time I had it right and would come home with not a single sunburn. This would be the time I would be victorious against the sun. A few hours after leaving and finally coming home, my skin turned a bright and concerning red. Boils quickly developed on my ears by the night and it was painful to bend my legs. I toke an ibuprofen, slathered greek yogurt and soaked cooled english breakfast tea all over my body. I ended up having to call out of work for two days and wear long sleeves and pants in late July weather. After some hours researching the internet, because I was so bored out of my mind, I realized I was allergic to chemical sunscreen ingredients. Since then, I have been using only physical sunscreen (I’ll definitely write up another post abut the difference of the two.) And I've been really focused on preventing anymore painful and traumatizing events like that.

So these are my top picks for a safe and burn-free summer

Josie Maran’s line is known for her argan oil and is a feature in most of her brand products, this sunscreen is no different. This is an all-natural, chemical-free sunscreen while being an argan oil-infused daily face moisturizer. I use this as the last step in my skincare routine and apply it in a tapping motion. It does leave a slight white cast as you apply it, which isn't unusual for physical sunscreen, but it goes away quickly and is easily covered by makeup.

I spent quite some time scoping through the web trying to find a physical sunscreen that was reasonably priced, actually works and has an unquestionably good set of ingredients. I always ended up going back to thinksport and after a while just bought it. The sunscreen has aloe barbadensis leaf juice, castor oil, jojoba oil, olive oil and cranberry seed oil, to name a few. It makes the sunscreen creamy but not difficult to apply and unlike most physical sunscreen this doesn’t leave a white cast. I do wish there was more product for the price but it’s a TSA approved size making it easier to travel with.

Since my beach nightmare, I have gotten a rather large tattoo on my left arm. This has made me even more cautious when spending long periods of time outside. I needed something compact and effective for my piece, which is why I decided on grabbing this sunscreen stick. It’s unscented and made from zinc oxide leaves a heavy white cast on the skin. But it’s a small price to pay for keeping your tattoo in great visual shape and preventing it from fading and bleeding. The sunscreen stick has a base of Extra Virgin Olive Oil, beeswax, jojoba and cocoa butter making it moisturizing and gentle enough for sensitive skin. Aside from being a great sunscreen, it’s easy to apply and great to just throw in a bag. It can also be used for touch ups on the face and body.
